What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy? A Modern Talking Therapy Approach in Sheffield

When people first hear the word hypnotherapy, they often feel unsure about what it actually involves.

For many, it brings to mind stage hypnosis, swinging watches or the idea of losing control. It is therefore completely understandable that people can feel curious, but also a little cautious.

One of the things I explain most often to new clients at Emerge Sheffield is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is very different from the way hypnotherapy is often portrayed. In reality, it is a modern, forward-looking and incredibly gentle form of talking therapy which incorporates relaxation and hypnosis as part of the process.

In fact, much of the work we do together during sessions is therapeutic conversation.

As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist & Psychotherapist based in Sheffield, I support people both in person and online with challenges including anxiety, overwhelm, stress, low confidence, self-esteem difficulties and periods of change. One of the things many clients say after their first session is ‘This feels very different to what I expected’.

Unlike some more traditional therapy approaches, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not involve endlessly revisiting the past or repeatedly analysing painful experiences. Instead, whilst acknowledging that life can feel incredibly difficult at times, the work gently focuses on where you are now, where you would like to get to, and the strengths and resources you already possess, even if they currently feel hard to access.

The ‘solution focused’ part is therefore hugely important.

Sessions are designed to help clients begin moving away from feeling stuck, overwhelmed or trapped in cycles of stress and overthinking, and towards feeling calmer, clearer and more hopeful about the future.

An important part of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy also involves understanding the brain and the impact stress and anxiety can have upon us emotionally and physically. When we are overwhelmed, anxious or under pressure for long periods of time, the brain naturally shifts into a more protective ‘survival mode’. This can make it much harder to think clearly, regulate emotions, or sleep properly.

Many clients tell me that simply understanding why they have been feeling the way they do helps reduce self-criticism enormously. Often, people are exhausted, overwhelmed and stuck in patterns which their brain has learnt in response to stress. Our brain thinks it’s protecting us, but actually it’s stopping us moving forward.

At Emerge Sheffield, I explain these concepts in a simple, compassionate and accessible way, helping clients better understand themselves whilst gently beginning to move forwards again.

The hypnosis and relaxation element of sessions usually takes place towards the end of the session. This is not about being unconscious or out of control. Instead, hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed state where the mind and body have an opportunity to slow down and settle. Most people describe it as feeling peaceful, calming and restorative - similar to drifting before sleep or becoming completely absorbed in a book or piece of music, or even driving a familiar route.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy in Sheffield can support people with a wide range of challenges including anxiety, stress, confidence difficulties, sleep problems, overwhelm, work-related pressure, interview nerves and emotional wellbeing. Because the approach is collaborative, practical and future-focused, many people find it feels gentler and more empowering than they expected therapy to feel.

Taking the first step towards therapy can feel daunting, and finding the right therapist is incredibly important. My approach is warm, supportive and tailored to you as an individual. Whether you are navigating anxiety, low confidence, stress or simply feeling emotionally exhausted, therapy can provide space to breathe, reflect and begin reconnecting with yourself again.
