Why High Functioning People Still Struggle With Confidence

Some of the people who struggle the most with confidence are often the people you would least expect.

They are the people who appear to ‘have it together’. They appear, well, absolutely fine. They are reliable, consistent, and often come across as calm, capable and successful.

Yet underneath all of that, many are quietly battling overthinking, self-doubt, pressure and exhaustion.

This is something I see first-hand through my work at Emerge Sheffield.

Many of the people I support are incredibly high functioning. They are caring, driven, self-aware and hardworking people who are doing their absolute best to manage busy lives, careers, families and responsibilities.

But somewhere along the way, they have stopped feeling calm within themselves, and very often they have cared at a cost to themselves.

Confidence struggles are not always obvious.

Many people become incredibly good at appearing calm and capable on the outside, whilst privately carrying stress, pressure and self-doubt underneath it all.

Eventually, holding everything together all of the time can feel exhausting.

Many high functioning people become so used to operating under pressure that stress starts to feel normal. They continue pushing forwards whilst quietly feeling overwhelmed underneath it all.

One of the things I feel most passionate about is helping people understand that they are not failing or ‘not coping properly’. Very often, the brain and body are simply stuck in survival mode for a little too long.

This is why Solution Focused practice is so powerful. Rather than endlessly pulling apart everything that feels difficult, we begin gently exploring strengths, progress, possibilities and small steps forwards.

At Emerge Sheffield, I combine Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, neuroscience, coaching and therapeutic techniques to create a calm, supportive and compassionate space where people can begin reconnecting with themselves again.

Alongside my therapy work, I also lead Benchmark, where for over 13 years I have supported people through career change, workplace stress, confidence struggles and periods of transition, alongside coaching teams and empowering managers.

What I have learned through both sides of my work is this: Even the people who appear strongest sometimes need support too.
